Family Winter Mountaineering And Backcountry Weekend

March 3 – March 5, 2017

 

At YMCA of the Rockies, we let nature inspire our family fitness. That’s why this winter, we’ll be hosting our second annual  “Family Winter Mountaineering and Backcountry Weekend!” Bordered on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park, YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park is the perfect place to mountaineer with your family into the national park.

We’ll be hosting family snowshoe hikes, backcountry ski meet ups, outdoor winter survival trainings, winter ecology hikes and much more. We’ll have guest speakers, excursions for every level of experience, and demos by popular mountaineering equipment brands such as LOWA and more!

Friday

1:00 -5:00 PM – Intro to Cross Country Skiing.  $65. Register Here

6:00 PM-Friday night kick off: Monumental: Skiing our National Parks is a beautiful film that will take you to our most beautiful National Parks. Following the film, local adventure dad Zach Zehr, will discuss some of his backcountry skiing adventures in Rocky Mountain National Park and how he gets out with his kids!

Saturday

Educational and informational sessions: Spend time honing in on skills like beacon search, backcountry first aid, and mountaineering skills. Enjoy meeting other families at our meet ups, chat about the weekend or your next adventure!

Child activities: Story time, child yoga, and hot chocolate mixers will be available throughout the morning.

Family Programs: Enjoy what the YMCA of the Rockies has to offer! Programs will be running throughout the afternoon. Enjoy some time at the Craft and Design Center, rent some ice skates, or take a dip in our indoor pool.

8:00-8:45 AM- Morning Bootcamp: High intensity interval training workouts that include strength training and cardio. Workouts can be modified to fit all fitness levels. Come for some fun and fellowship as well as a great workout! Meet at the Longhouse Gym.

9:00-9:45 AM- Children’s Yoga: Meet at the Longhouse Gym.

9:00-10:30 AM- Ice Anchors: Come enjoy ice-climbing skill activities. Meet outside of Hemple Auditorium.

9:00-10:30 AM- Avalanche Awareness: Learn to read the snow, dig an avalanche pit, and know before you go. Meet at Willome Meeting Center.

9:00-10:30 AM- Mountain Navigation: Learn about topographic maps and orienteering. Meet at Willome Meeting Center.

9:00-10:30 AM- Winter Dog Search and Rescue: Activities will be located outside Sweet Memorial.

10:30-11:00 AM- Children’s Story Time: Meet at Sweet Memorial.

11:00-12:30 PM- Winter Family Adventure: Kid-lead hike and fun snow activities. Meet at Sweet Memorial at 9:00 AM. Sweet Memorial Building

11:00-12:30 PM- Winter Overnight Backcountry Skills: This class includes how to build a snow-cave. Activities will be located outside Sweet Memorial.

11:00-12:30 PM- Beacon Rescue Skills: Meet at Willome Meeting Center.

11:00-12:30 PM- Mountain Guardian: Participate in hands on activities in backcountry first aid. Meet at Willome Meeting Center.

12:30-3:00 PM- Roller Skating Party at Bob Ecker Skating Rink.

1:30-3:00 PM- Ladies Meet Up: Climbing Session. Intro to SheJumps and outfit Women’s Ice Climbing participants. Willome East

1:30-3:00 PM- Family WarmUp: This includes indoor craft activities and hot chocolate. Meet at Sweet Memorial.

1:30-300 PM- Mountain Shop Presentation: TBD

3:00-7:00 PM- Activity Hall & Keynote Presentation.
Activity Hall will be open at Assembly Hall. Mountain Adventure Exhibition.

Keynote Speakers: Assembly Hall, Doors Open at 7:00pm Climbing Party of Four will be speaking about their adventurous life with two children– climbing, skiing, and traveling in their 1990 VW Vanagon that was recycled, restored, and rebuilt into a modernized functionally reliable Westfalia Syncro Vanagon ready to take on the road, and ready to take on many adventures!

Sunday

Excursions: Get out with your family or enjoy testing your limits on a snowshoe hike! Morning excursions will be available for all levels of adventure.

7:00 AM – 1:00 PM Women’s Ice Climbing. Hidden Falls RMNP. Register with SheJumps here

9:00 AM -12:30 PM- Hidden Valley Ski Excursion: Rentals are available from the Mountain Shop. Sign up activity- $140 Register Here. 

9:00 AM -12:30 PM- Winter Ecology Hike: This is a guided three mile hike into Moraine Park. Meet at Sweet Memorial at 9:00 AM. Free. Register Here. 

9:00-12:30 PM- Winter Snowshoe Hike: This is a guided three mile hike to Emerald Lake. Meet at Sweet Memorial at 9:00 AM. Free. Register Here.
