Family Winter Mountaineering And Backcountry Weekend

Family adventurers save the date! YMCA of the Rockies will hold its 3rd annual Family Winter Mountaineering and Backcountry Weekend on March 1-4, 2018. Book now to reserve your spot.

Andrew Skurka

Recently named “Best Family Resort in America” by USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards, YMCA of the Rockies is located on 800+ acres with three sides bordering Rocky Mountain National Park, providing the perfect landscape for outdoor enthusiasts and their families (and dogs) to explore mountaineering. Whether it’s your first time out, or your family has camped in national parks many times, this special event has excursions for every level.

This year, two keynote speaker presentations will be given by Andrew Skurka, the author of “The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide,” best known for his solo backpacking adventures, and Hilaree O’Neill, a North Face athlete (and mother of two young boys) who has skied everywhere from Tibet to the high peaks of Bolivia and Argentina, as well as many first descents in the tight couloirs of Baffin Island.

The Family Mountaineering Weekend features educational sessions on winter survival tips and mountaineering skills (learn about avalanche awareness, beacon rescue searches, orienteering and the best first aid for backcountry), guided family snowshoe hikes & winter ecology explorations in RMNP, backcountry ski meet-ups, ice climbing lessons, and demos by popular mountaineering equipment brands such as LOWA. Don’t miss the chance to check out new 2018 products from retailers and enjoy meeting other families while you plan your next adventure.

Hilaree O’Neill

Children will enjoy special story times, kid-lead hikes and fun snow activities (with hot chocolate of course). Regular YMCA of the Rockies programs will be running throughout the weekend, providing a great opportunity to check out the Craft and Design Center, rent some ice skates(weather depending), or take a dip in the indoor pool.

All Family Mountaineering Weekend activities are free for guests staying in lodge rooms or cabins. Day passes for guests staying off-grounds are also available for $20 per person, per day.

YMCA’s Super Value rates are valid for lodge rooms, private cabins and family reunion cabins. Families can participate in the weekend for as low as $79 per night for a lodge room or $104 per night for a two-bedroom cabin. Take advantage of our winter lodging special, save 25% off your total lodging bill when you book 3 nights in a lodge room or 4 nights in a cabin, must book by Feb. 28, 2018, see special for complete details.

She’s also skied from the Himalayan summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet and climbed and skied several high peaks in Bolivia and Argentina. Elsewhere, Hilaree has cut turns on remote volcanoes in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Lebanon, as well as many first descents in the tight couloirs of Baffin Island.

In addition to her work for The North Face, Hilaree is a mother to two young boys, and although they have changed her life dramatically, her passion for the mountains has not abated. She lives in Telluride, Colorado and finds her sanity in the beautiful San Juan Mountains.
