What is Nordic Skiing vs Cross-Country Skiing?

The difference between Nordic and cross-country skiing is simple – they’re the same thing! This form of skiing started over 5,000 years ago when people used skis to travel in winter. Today, it’s both a fun hobby and competitive sport.

Nordic skiing differs from alpine skiing (downhill) in how your boots attach to the skis. In Nordic skiing, only the front of your boot connects to the ski. This lets you lift your heel to walk on flat ground or go uphill.

You can try two main styles:

  • Classic cross-country skis move straight ahead, like walking
  • Skate skiing pushes out to the sides, like ice skating

Why Choose Nordic Skiing?

Easy to Start, Easy on Your Wallet

Generally, Nordic skiing costs less than downhill skiing. Trail passes are cheaper than $200+ lift tickets. You can often find groomed runs at local parks or golf courses. The ski boots are more comfortable too!

Great Exercise

Nordic skiing works your whole body. You’ll:

  • Build stronger legs and arms
  • Improve your balance
  • Get a good heart workout
  • Burn lots of calories
  • Have fun while exercising

Unlike busy ski resorts with downhill runs, Nordic centers are usually quiet and peaceful. At the Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center you can:

Getting Started with Cross-Country Skiing

What to Wear
1. Base layer: Wear something that keeps sweat away from your skin
2. Middle layer: Add a warm fleece or wool layer
3. Outer layer: Top with a jacket that blocks wind
4. Avoid: Cotton clothes – they stay wet and make you cold

Learning the Basics
Start with these simple steps:

Standing Position
• Feet hip-width apart
• Knees slightly bent
• Back straight
• Look ahead at the trail

Moving Forward
• Shift weight to one ski
• Push with your other foot
• Let yourself glide

• Go slow at first

Using Poles
• Plant poles next to your body
• Use opposite arm and leg

• Don’t plant poles too far ahead

Stopping
• Push ski backs apart (like a pizza slice)
• Keep knees bent
• Lean slightly forward
• Practice on flat ground first
