Nature Workshop: Birds by Habitat
Our Nature Workshops cater to adult learners, providing an engaging and hands-on approach to exploring the wonders of the natural world in the beautiful setting of the Rocky Mountains.
Birds by Habitat with Debbie Bangs
Participants will gain foundational knowledge about the birds that are found in the montane and alpine tundra life zones during the spring and summer seasons. Learn about tools birders use to successfully identify birds in their habitats, the key features of birds that help with accurate and quick identification, and the common characteristics of the families of birds seen in the area. As this class travels to various habitats on the YMCA grounds and in Rocky Mountain National Park, participants will practice their new identification skills. Each participant will need a pair of binoculars and a bird field guide of their choice.
Workshop Times:
Wednesday, June 19: 1-4:30 PM
Thursday, June 20: 8 AM-4:30 PM
Friday, June 21: 8 AM-12 PM

About the Instructor:
Debbie Bangs has been observing birds in Rocky Mountain National Park for a lifetime as a several generation Estes Park resident. She spent her teens and twenties working with her primary mentor, Dr. Richard Beidleman, while spending many hours in the field researching bird populations in the various habitats during breeding and nesting season. The result of this research was presented as a thesis culminating with a master’s degree from the University of Colorado. From 1982-1992, Debbie worked as partners with Dr. Ron Ryder from Colorado State University on a bird census study after the Lawn Lake Flood, monitoring the species recovery from Horseshoe Park and the Alluvial Fan for Rocky Mountain National Park. Debbie’s work was within the damaged area and Dr. Ryder’s team worked the control site comparison. In the last eight years, Debbie has participated in owl research in Rocky Mountain National Park with Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute, of which she is the secretary. Debbie spent her lifetime career as an elementary teacher, but has recently retired from public school teaching, and currently is the assistant director for the environmental education program at the YMCA of the Rockies-Estes Park Center.
