Elk are one of the most iconic parts of the Estes Park experience, and fall is one of the best times to see them. As summer gives way to autumn, elk move toward lower elevations and begin gathering for their annual mating season, known as the rut. In Colorado and Estes Park, the rut typically begins around mid-September and continues into October, bringing both increased elk activity and a greater need for visitors to give these animals plenty of space.

Whether you're visiting for a weekend, planning a fall getaway, or simply looking for a quieter mountain escape, September offers a little bit of everything.

YMCA of the Rockies is a special place visited by many people across the country every year. Many of our favorite fall activities are self-guided and included with your stay, which means you can wake up, see what the day brings and choose your own adventure. Hike when you’re ready. Challenge the family to mini golf. Hunt for a geocache. Grab a board game for the cabin. Or do absolutely nothing for a while except sit outside and take in the view.

The days are still warm, the trails are open, and summer activities are in full swing, but there are already signs that fall is on its way. Higher elevations begin to cool, the first aspens start thinking about turning gold, and the mountains begin their gradual transition toward winter. For a long weekend, Labor Day is a perfect excuse to make the drive into the Rockies.
