Top 15 Games to Play Over Zoom

April 27, 2020

If you’re like me, ZOOM has become an easy way to connect with those I love.

By: By Susan Taylor, Program Director at YMCA of the Rockies

When I’m with my family at the YMCA of the Rockies, we’re playing games the entire time. Whether it’s participating in BINGO and Trivia in Sweet Memorial, borrowing board games and bringing them back to our cabin, or sitting in the library putting together a puzzle, games are a huge part of our YMCA experience.

Even when I’m not physically in the same room as my friends or extended family, games are a great way to connect us.  If you’re like me, ZOOM has become an easy way to connect with those I love. And connection is now more important than ever. Try one of these out the next time you’re looking for a new game to play with friends and family over zoom:

Traditional Games (all players must have their own copy of the game)

  1. UNO!
  2. Go Fish
  3. Euchre
  4. Apples to Apples
  5. Head’s Up (By Ellen Degeneres)
  6. Guess Who?
  7. Yahtzee!
  8. Boggle

Games Outside the Box:

  1. 21 Questions. Get to know your friends and family better! Make up your own questions, or use this PDF as a starter.
  2. “Song, Book, or Movie.” Have each participant prepare ahead of time by selecting a song, book, or movie. During the call, you can wear a costume, hold up a prop, or act out a clue. Everyone else on the call has to guess the answer based on your clues!
  3. Trivia. Select one person to be the organizer. Select questions ahead of time, and have the others write down their answers.
  4. Telephone. This one takes some creative organizing. Each family has to turn down the volume on their own computer. The first person uses the chat button to tell someone else to turn up the volume. They share a sentence, and the listener must choose someone else to pass the message along to. The chat function is key in this game, and requires everyone to follow the rules and turn down the volume when it’s not their turn.
  5. Pictionary. This classic game holds up well virtually. Use the whiteboard option on zoom, or use old fashioned pen and paper. For a fun twist, create categories that remind you of the YMCA, including Rocky Mountain animals, activities at the Y, food you eat on a hike, or things you might see in the administration building.
  6. Host a murder mystery. Follow the directions on this website. This game requires some fancy zoom functions, including Break Out Rooms. Read about how to organize Break Out Rooms here.
  7. Chopped. Look for common ingredients that each family member has in their kitchen. Then, compete to see who can create the best meal with those ingredients.
