The Secret Summer Seasons

March 25, 2022

Book a stay during the "bookends" of summer!

Looking for a summer getaway to the Rocky Mountains, but want to avoid crowds and lines? We are going to let you in on the secret of the summer bookends! The first two weeks of June and the last two weeks of August are prime times to plan a mountain getaway. Guests can enjoy the warm summer weather, great hiking and outdoor adventures while avoiding the prime summer family vacation time periods. YMCA of the Rockies' two locations are the perfect basecamp to explore these unique Colorado destinations!

Early June Highlights

Welcoming summer with an early June visit brings many wonderful sights and sounds in the mountains. The snow has melted at lower elevations, fueling rushing rivers and the invigorating sound of the water jumping over river rocks and river beds. Wildflowers are blooming and you can catch early bloomers including the pasqueflower and alpine sunflowers. Wildlife is abundant in early summer and often guests can view (of course at a great distance!) recently born elk, deer and moose.

Late August Highlights

The sun has set on the summer frenzy, kids are back in school and the days are long and warm, perfect for a few days of adventure. Hiking trails, even into the high-country, are free of snow and access to mountain tops are in "peak" season. Nights are at their warmest, ideal for camping and evening campfires. The rivers have calmed and are ideal for soaking feet, tired from a day of adventures. Local golf courses are open, a vibrant green and ready for a round of golf, many times alongside grazing elk herds.

The Summer Bookend Seasons at YMCA of the Rockies

Two favorite Colorado mountain vacation resorts YMCA of the Rockies - Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch, both located at the gateway of the treasured Rocky Mountain National Park, offer visitors access to wide open spaces, beautiful mountain scenery, comfortable lodging, and unique on-site activities for all ages without leaving the properties. During this "secret summer" time period, guests can enjoy a variety of activities including archery lessons, creating keepsake projects in the craft centers, playing miniature golf or tennis, roller skating, swimming, history and cultural programming, on-site libraries, and the Snow Mountain Ranch summer tubing hill. For the adventurous, there are also fishing, rock climbing with skilled instructors, mountain biking trails, guided hikes through Rocky Mountain National Park, and expansive on-site dog parks.

Accommodations range from affordable hotel-style lodge rooms with common areas to multi-bedroom private cabins. Pet-friendly options are available at both locations. Snow Mountain Ranch also features yurts and campsites in the summer months. Many guests host reunions or group retreats during the summer, with several larger reunion cabins that sleep up to 88 guests in as many as 17 bedrooms. Most lodge rooms and cabins do not have televisions, providing a truly unplugged experience for everyone involved. Reservations can be made online or by calling the reservation department at 888-613-9622.
