Family Winter Mountaineering And Backcountry Weekend

At YMCA of the Rockies, we let nature inspire our family fitness. That’s why this winter, we’ll be hosting our first ever “Family Winter Mountaineering and Backcountry Weekend!” Bordered on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park, YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park is the perfect place to mountaineer with your family into the national park.

We’ll be hosting family snowshoe hikes, backcountry ski meet ups, outdoor winter survival trainings, winter ecology hikes and much more. Learn from rock climbing expert and outdoor enthusiast Tommy Caldwell and his wife Becca on the importance of bringing the family outdoors. Learn how backcountry and mountaineering for the family can be fun and inspiring.

We’ll have guest speakers, excursions for every level of experience, and demos by popular mountaineering equipment brands such as LOWA, LEKI, and much more!

Friday night kick off: Guests on property are welcome to join us for a meet and greet Friday evening.  Enjoy some refreshments and a short film to get you in the spirit of the weekend!


Saturday morning excursions: Excursions will start at designated times and run through the morning.  They are open programs, so come and go as you please.

  • Backcountry Meet Up- Mountain Shop- Hidden Valley
    • Stretch your legs out at Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park. As one of the most popular backcountry spots in the park, it has a lot to offer all levels of backcountry skiing, split boarding, Nordic skiing, and snowshoeing.  Hidden Valley was established as a ski resort in 1955 with its first tow rope, and all lifts were removed in 1993.  Trek through old ski runs and lift lines with your family or hike up to Tombstone Ridge for a more extreme experience.  THIS IS NOT A GUIDED ACTIVITY. Nothing is provided (safety equipment, gear, etc)
      Meet at Hidden Valley Warming Hut at 8:00am to meet up with others wanting a morning adventure in the park!
  • Outdoor Winter Survival 101
    • Never been to the area? Curious to perfect your skills in the field?  Every backcountry area is different and requires different preparation and skills.  Get outside and learn about winter conditions in the Rocky Mountain National Park area with one of our experienced local.  Skills taught include preparation, orienteering, snow cave making, fires, snow variations, and more!
      Meet at Sweet Memorial at 9:00am on YMCA of the Rockies property.  Be prepared to be outdoors for the duration of the excursion.
  • Winter Ecology Hike
    • If you’re interested in learning about the animal adaptations and local Rocky Mountain ecosystems, join our local Hikemasters on a hike into Rocky Mountain National Park through Moraine Park. Hike the 3 mile loop into the park while learning all about the winter adaptations of the area.  Families are encouraged to come together!
      Meet at Sweet Memorial at 9:00am on YMCA of the Rockies property.  Snowshoes, microspikes, boots, child carriers, and trekking poles available for rental at Sweet Memorial.
  • Winter Family Adventuring
    • Take the family out for some winter fun! Get the children out together to enjoy what the season has to offer. A little hiking, some games, snowman and igloo making, snow painting, and some indoor activities.  Come and go as you wish 9:00am-11:00am.  Activities will be located outside of Sweet Memorial, hike begins at 9:00am will run until 10:30am.

Family Programs: Enjoy what the YMCA of the Rockies has to offer!  Programs will be running throughout the afternoon.  Enjoy some time at the Craft and Design Center, rent some ice skates, or take a dip in our indoor pool.

Vendor Hall: Starting at 3:00 our Vendor Hall will be open.  Retailers like LOWA, Black Diamond, G3 skis, North Face, and Strider bikes will be demoing their new products for 2016.  Bring your tote back and be ready to go home with swag!  Raffle will begin at 5:00.

Apres Ski Happy Hour: Happy hour sponsored by Estes Park Mountain Shop will begin at 5:00 with local brewery Rock Cut Brewing.  Enjoy a drink, check out vendors, and prepare for our keynote speaker.

Keynote Speaker: Tommy Caldwell will be speaking with his family about the importance of getting outdoors and how having young children hasn’t slowed down the Caldwell Family.  Tommy Caldwell is Elevation Outdoors Resident Badass, known for his ascent of the Dawn Wall.  His is a local Estes Park resident, born and raised; now raising his children here.


Educational and informational sessions:  Gather for smaller educational sessions this morning.  Spend time honing in on skills like beacon search, search and rescue, and mountaineering skills.  Enjoy meeting other families at our meet ups, chat about the weekend or your next adventure!  Sessions will be an hour and a half long.

Child activities:  Story time, child yoga, hot chocolate mixers will be available throughout the morning.
