That’s why this winter, we’ll be hosting our first ever “Family Winter Mountaineering and Backcountry Weekend!” Bordered on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park, YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park is the perfect place to mountaineer with your family into the national park. Recently, YMCA of the Rockies –Camp Chief Ouray leaders Kathy Stanish and Matthew Sullivan teamed up with Middle Park High School teacher Jack Dugwyler to bring the Youth in Government program to six local students from Middle Park High School (MPHS) in Granby, CO. Youth in Government is a YMCA of Metropolitan Denver-sponsored event that gives students first-hand knowledge of how government works. According to the Denver YMCA website, “for three months every year, students learn about the state’s democratic system, and how laws and government shape people’s lives. If you can walk, you can snowshoe!  Snowshoeing is a great way to explore Estes Park Center and our neighbor, Rocky Mountain National Park, when the snow starts accumulating.  Our Program Department offers snowshoe rentals in the Sweet Memorial Program Building for $10 per day for adults (ages 13+) and $5 per day for children 12 and younger; learn more here. For trails that don’t have enough snow for snowshoeing, but are still hard packed and icy, we also offer microspikes for the same price as snowshoe rentals; microspikes provide great traction and safety on icy trails and are very useful in the early winter and spring.
